To achieve the best out of Digital media more easily and effectively there are thousands of tools available to developers these days. One of which is a Content Management System in sort CMS is a piece of software that allows us to manage the content of the website. Joomla and Word Press are big names when it comes to choosing a CMS.
Joomla is one of the world’s most popular CMS. Since, 2006 it is downloaded more than 30 million times. Joomla is open source and free to use and is the only non-corporate backed community driven CMS platform in the world. It supports modern programming standards using Object Oriented Programming and wrapping things up with strong MVC (Model View Controller) design pattern. Joomla is a widely translated CMS with over 60 available languages. According to a video on www.joomla.org 2.8% of the entire internet runs Joomla.
On the other hand Word Press is a CMS and blogging tool that’s also free to use just like Joomla. It was first launched 2003 as a basic blogging engine, but then it also emerged as a CMS for websites. These days used by millions of people for different purposes. It is estimated that today it powers more than 60 million websites. Word Press is very SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) friendly, fully compliant with W3C standards.
So, we find that both are free and Open source platforms have some common and some different qualities. That’s where questions arise. Which one should I use?
Let us take a brief look at what I found in my research.
Digital Multimedia tools Joomla VS Word Press
There was a time when websites were only written by expert developers in HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) and everything was to be hand coded.
But, now things are changing, people are now using Content Management Systems to build blogs and websites as they can be used by anyone even if the person is not a web developer, they are easy to manage as it allows editing, publishing and modifying the content form one central interface. And CMS websites also provide best Search Engine Optimisation that is providing good titles to pages so site has more possibility to come in search result.
Joomla is an open source and a powerful content management system. It is one of the most popular CMS solutions with 30 million downloads to date. It was designed to be a complete CMS to develop complex sites from the beginning. So, Joomla provides you tools and plugins to take a complex site easily then Word Press. Many of the Joomla user loves it because it is powerful but yet easy to use. Joomla has done good work joining the features of Word Press and Drupal and adding some of its own great features. Joomla is best suited for static websites. It has been growing in popularity very rapidly over the past several years and likely to grow at an even faster rate. And one reason for people joining Joomla seems to be its more features that is, it is slightly powerful then Word Press but is easy to use then Drupal. Joomla allows everyone to create their own webpage from business or personal sites and one benefit of Joomla is that if you want to have a business site then you certainly need to use self-hosted website. Some of the reliable Joomla hosting solutions are Blue host, SiteGroup etc. Overall, Building websites with Joomla is always fun.
Advantages of Joomla
The best advantage of Joomla is an open source tool and available for free of cost. All the source code is free and the user can reuse or modify according to his requirements.
Joomla isn’t a Word Press but relatively quite easy to use, flexible and powerful.
Strong Developer Community
Joomla has a strong developer community with tons of free plugins to use. All these plugins are saved in a plugin library known as extensions in Joomla.
Joomla can be used in many ways from making a small and simple personal blog or a personal website or a huge corporate website. Even online magazines or communities can be easily built using Joomla CMS. Joomla powers many popular and noteworthy websites like eBay, cloud.com and Linux.com
In terms, of accessibility Joomla is very easy to use and even a person with no technical knowledge of HTML can easily build a good website with Joomla. Thus the very big advantage of this CMS is that you just install it and you are ready to create, modify and change the content of your website. Overall, Joomla is very good at accessibility and there is no need for prior knowledge of Web Development to create a website with Joomla.
Joomla is run by a vast community so if you have any problem with maintaining your site in Joomla you can submit a report or a bug. Since, it is run by a vast community of developers and experienced people your problem will be solved in real time. So, in terms of Customer support Joomla stands tall in the market.
Disadvantages of Joomla
But like everything in the world that comes with advantages has some disadvantages as well. Disadvantages of using Joomla are-
Lacks SEO capabilities
Joomla lack SEO capabilities up to some extent you will need to do a lot of work to achieve high levels of search engine friendliness on Joomla.
One major drawback that Joomla users face is that some of its plugins work with only some particular scripts only and it is very hard to cope with this.
Limited ACL support
Access Control list refers to the permissions that can be granted to some specific pages for specific pages.
It makes your website a bit heavy to load and run over a server as it uses lots of plugins and themes.
WordPress was started as a blogging system, but it can be used to create a website just like Joomla. You can create pages and posts using a large variety of plugins available and add lots of functionality included standard in Joomla. Thousands of themes are available to build interactive design. As, WordPress is mainly a blogging system google seems to be loving WordPress. So, WordPress suits best for marketing and is hard to resist. It is being continually being improved by a vast community of developers, designers and thousands of feedback from its active users. It is estimated that more than 60 million websites use WordPress, making it one of the worlds most favourite CMS and blog system. Some of the WordPress clients include New York Times, CNN and Forbes etc.
Advantages of using WordPress
Open Source and free to use
WordPress is a free, open source application so anyone can use and there is no need of previous development knowledge to use it.
Huge Plugin Library
Like Joomla, WordPress also has a vast range of plugins available, but its plugins are even easier to use and does not require particular scripts to run them unlike Joomla which has some plugins that need particular scripts to run.
WordPress is highly intuitive and easy to use even for the first time users. With this powerful tool you can drop a theme, add some plugins and start within minutes.
In terms of accessibility WordPress is even better than Joomla and easier to use.It provides its users with a framework that is very flexible and scalable.
SEO(Search Engine Optimisation)
Since, WordPress is mainly a blog software and CMS it seems like google loves websites made with WordPress and the website are very SEO friendly. Unlike Joomla, making WordPress SEO friendly is just as easy as installing a free software or plugin. Whereas, in Joomla there is need of tons of plugins to make it same SEO friendly as WordPress.
Its theming system is built in a way that if a person has little grasp on CSS and HTML can easily customize its themes to best suit his or her needs.
Disadvantages of WordPress
As it is one of the leading software with millions of downloads, WordPress is often the target of hackers. WordPress itself is not too secure as it uses third party plugins.
Limited Content Management Capabilities
It was mainly developed as a blogging platform that’s why WordPress is not very ideal with handling large amount of web pages where Joomla was developed as a CMS from the beginning so it is better than WordPress in this area.
Modification needs knowledge of the PHP language
Operations like changing or removing a date field requires a knowledge of PHP. Hence, becoming unstable for non-developers were in Joomla its quite easy and can be managed in the control panel even by a non-developer.
It can be clearly seen from the research that similarities and differences do occur between Joomla and WordPress. They have various advantages over one another still they have their own importance Joomla is more particular CMS for static and heavy websites whereas WordPress is most suitable for blogging and small websites and WordPress has an advantage of SEO due to its blogging platform.
